Beginner’s Guide to IPL Treatments

What is an IPL Treatment?

IPL Photofacials, or Intense Pulsed Light Photofacials, use broadband light to reduce the appearance of sunspots, skin discoloration, rosacea and age spots, as well as improve skin texture, acne, and minor scarring. The treatment can also be used for hair removal, to boost collagen production, and reduce pore size – the list of benefits goes on and on!

To prepare for an IPL treatment, stop all Retin-A and retinol usage at least four days before your scheduled treatment. You will also be asked to wash your face once you arrive to your appointment to remove any makeup or skincare products for the best results.

What Happens During an IPL Photofacial?

Because IPL machines use broad-spectrum light to penetrate the deep layers of the skin, we start your treatment by applying a topical numbing cream to ensure you’re comfortable throughout your treatment. After 20 minutes we remove the numbing cream as to not occlude the laser light and we add ultrasound gel to your clean skin. Not only does the gel help the laser smoothly glide over the skin, but it also keeps your skin nice and cool as the heated laser travels over it. You will also have small glasses covering your eyes to shield them from the bright light emitted with each pulse of the laser.

We can effectively target specific areas with our IPL laser, easily avoiding microbladed eyebrows or tattoos that could be negatively affected by the laser.

What Does an IPL Treatment Feel Like?

Many people compare IPL treatments to a light snap on the treated area with every pulse of light. Because we add a topical anesthetic to the area before the treatment, most of our clients feel extremely comfortable throughout the procedure. If your skin tends to be a little on the sensitive side, we can always lower the settings to decrease any discomfort.

What are the Side-Effects of an IPL Photofacial?

Most clients will experience mild redness directly after the treatment, which typically dissipates within a few hours or by the next day. Rare swelling can occur in the affected areas that quickly dissipates.

How to Get the Best Results From an IPL Treatment?

Although IPLs can be done at any time of year, fall and winter are prime times to schedule a treatment to repair summer sun exposure. The recommended cadence of IPL Photofacials is three to six treatments, spaced one month apart. However, depending on the condition of your skin, you could see amazing results with just one or two treatments. After the desired results are achieved from your initial treatment series, once or twice yearly sessions can maintain treatment results.

Daily mineral sunscreen is a must to protect your investment – even when you don’t plan on spending time outside.

How Much Do IPL Treatments Cost?

While IPL treatments are more costly than procedures like microdermabrasion or chemical peels, the results are well worth the cost. At other locations, the cost for a single IPL treatment can range from $500-600 per treatment, but at Buda Medspa, our goal is always to provide affordable and effective treatments, so our pricing is a lot more wallet-friendly.
